Changing the Future: Young People and Personal Finance
Michigan State University Extension, Family Economics and Consumerism are excited to be active partners of four key efforts designed to address the economic climate in Michigan. Michigan State University Extension is committed to bringing knowledge to life by engaging citizens and families in events, activities and educational opportunities which promotes rigor research, and evidence base programming in the area of family economics and consumerism. Listed below are four national strategies of which Michigan State University Extension has adopted for 2009
• America Saves Week
• National Entrepreneurship Week
• Money Smart Week
• Global Entrepreneurship Week
These four initiatives are opportunities to increase awareness/knowledge and skills as it relates to entrepreneurship and family economics and consumerism.
America Saves Week (ASW) is February 22-March 1, 2009. This event is sponsored by the Consumer Federation of America. Its primary goal is to encourage consumers to save money. National Entrepreneurship Week (NEW)
is February 21-28, 2009.
Sponsored by the Consortium for Entrepreneurship Education (CEE) this event
challenges educators nationwide to join with entrepreneurs and economic developers
to sponsor events at the local, state, and national level. As an advocate for
entrepreneurial education as a lifelong learning process, the CEE is reaching
out to educational leadership nationwide to support entrepreneurship education
programs and activities that prepare youth and adults for careers in the 21st

Money Smart Week (MSW) is April 18–25, 2009. This event is sponsored by
the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago – Detroit Branch. The primary goal
of this event is to educate Michiganders about financial education through free

Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) is November 16-22, 2009.
Global Entrepreneurship Week www.unleashingideas.org
has hopes of helping youth gain the skill of growing financially stable businesses
which in turn will help boost Michigan’s economy. The week will address
the world’s leading problems, including climate change, poverty and sustainability.
