Attention All Staff:

The Family Resource Management Area of Expertise Team has made available for MSUE county offices to purchase bulk orders of the following slide rule calculators from Advantage Publications. Each calculator is personalized with the MSUE logo and website.

Credit Card Smarts” – The “Credit Card Smarts” calculator shows the true cost of paying just the 2% minimum payment each month and the value of boosting each monthly payment. It also shows how many years it would take someone to pay off a credit card, paying just the minimum payment verses how many years if you paid more than 2%.

“Where to Find Money You Need” – The “Where to Find the Money You Need” calculator shows how curtailing impulse buying and routine spending on “little things” can result in big savings for important goals. For example, if you spend $2 a day less; this calculator shows individuals how much that savings equates to in a week, thirty day period, one year, five years, ten years, and twenty years.

Financial Management

All My Money – University of Illinois
This is a financial management curriculum for persons working with limited-resource audiences. It focuses on eight lessons:

FDIC – Money Smart - The FDIC created the Money Smart curriculum; a training program to help adults outside the financial mainstream enhance their money skills and create positive banking relationships.

Finding Paths to Prosperity – The Corporation for Enterprise Development (CFED), National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE), and Fannie Mae Foundation have brought together the expertise of community development practitioners, academics, foundations, and financial literacy experts to develop a unique financial literacy initiative and curriculum. This initiative aims to provide the growing Individual Development Account (IDA) field with resources and tools to provide high quality and practical financial literacy education.

Furthering Families – Furthering Families provides informational materials to help families cope with food safety, financial management, and family stress issues. Furthering Families is a grant-funded partnership between Michigan State University Extension and the Michigan Department of Agriculture made available through the Bovine TB Eradication Project.

Managing Your Money , 8-page guide, $.75 from MSU Extension* An easy-to-follow guide to developing a budget and a spending and savings plan to help families achieve financial goals and manage financial resources. – link to bulletins office.

Managing Your Money (Worksheet) , 6-page, free electronically from MSU Extension. Worksheets to accompany E1778 that help determine family income, debt, major expenses, and fixed and controllable expenses.

Money 2000 Bulletin Series – This eight bulletin series offers home study tools and activity sheets to assist individuals with money management decisions. NEFE High School Financial Planning Program A financial literacy program is targeted at high school youth. It is designed to alert, inform, and educate high school students about sound money management skills and the financial planning process. – A PDF file of brochure for Michigan’s program

Record of Important Family Papers, 16-page, $1 from MSU Extension* An Extension booklet to help you list your important family papers and their location. Space is provided to record family and insurance information, retirement plans, checking and savings accounts, credit and charge cards, real estate records, government, municipal and corporate bonds, mutual funds, stocks and outstanding debts.

Financial Security in Later Life National Extension Initiative

Investing for Your Future – This 11-unit home study course was developed by the Rutgers Cooperative Extension system for beginning investors with small dollar amounts to invest at any one time.

Retirement

Early Retirement Options – Iowa State University Extension developed a web site to assist individuals who are interested in early retirement options. This site will assist you in making the best decision you can as to if you should retire early or not.

Financial Security in Later Life National Extension Initiative

Planning for a Secure Retirement – Purdue University Extension curriculum to assist families and individuals in preparing for a secure retirement. This online curriculum has worksheets and handouts to assist the participant as they plan for their future.

Retirement Estimator for Farm Families – This online curriculum is available from Purdue University Extension. It is designed to assist farm families in planning for a secure retirement.

Retirement: Secure Your Dreams – Curriculum developed by Iowa State University to assist in planning for retirement regardless of the length of time you to have to prepare.
